Multidiscipline Care for a Patient Living with ALS
Abstract
The case report describes an interprofessional simulation designed for nursing students, focusing on the complex care of a patient with advanced Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The primary learning objectives are for students to analyze the interaction of neurological, respiratory, nutritional, and functional challenges in ALS; prioritize nursing interventions based on patient goals and quality of life; synthesize interdisciplinary assessments into a coordinated care plan; evaluate interventions considering patient preferences and clinical evidence; and formulate an interprofessional plan addressing both immediate and future needs. The simulation involves a 61-year-old patient, James Carter, who faces progressive functional, respiratory, nutritional, communication, and psychosocial challenges due to ALS. Learners must collaborate with a respiratory therapist, dietitian, speech-language pathologist, and palliative care specialist to integrate James's goals and preferences into a patient-centered care plan. This case is useful in a curriculum for developing advanced clinical judgment, interprofessional collaboration, and patient advocacy skills, preparing students for practice in complex healthcare environments.
